Commendation, The

Publisher: LAH Publications

Catalogue Number: LAH 43

Year: 2018

For: SATB with Treble Solo with Piano or Organ

Duration: 2:30

This is a simple setting of the commendation, relying mainly on the solo voice. It is possible to have congregations join in with the “Alleluia” response. I wrote this as a gift for St John’s South March Anglican Church in Kanata, for my choirs there – the St John’s Choir and the Parish of March Youth Choir, and for the Rev. John Wilker-Blakley.

“The Commendation” from the Anglican Book of Alternative Services funeral rite

Give rest, O Christ, to your servants with your saints,
Where sorrow and pain are no more
Neither sighing, but life everlasting.

You only are immortal, the creator and maker of all;
And we are moral, f ormed of the earth,
And to earth shall we return.
For so did you ordain when you created me, saying,
“You are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
All of us go down to the dust;

Yet even at the grave we make our song:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Give rest, O Christ, to your servants with your saints,
Where sorrow and pain are no more,
Neither sighing, but life everlasting.
