Let’s Have Some Music

Publisher: Cypress Choral Music

Year: 2021

For: SATB with Piano

Duration: 3:30

Let’s Have Some Music was commissioned by the Nova Scotia Choral Federation
with support from the Estate of Robbie Smith, as part of the Robbie Songs Project – a Nova Scotian songwriter’s legacy.

This is such a ‘good times’ song! When Kathleen Glauser (of the Robbie & Kathleen duo group Naming the Twins) approached me about writing arrangements of Robbie’s music, this song jumped out to me at a time when choirs had been unable to gather together for over a year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time (spring 2020), I was anticipating a resurgence of choral gatherings to come in the fall of 2020, and thought this would be a really fun song to focus on arranging, as a sort of personal celebration looking forward to this. I think this piece has a wonderful positive message, and would work well in many different concert programs – it’s such a happy song! You can listen below to a previously unreleased ‘rough take’ of Kathleen and Robbie singing this song together.

This arrangement is available from Cypress Choral Music. I have two other arrangements available of music by Robbie Smith: Lincoln Cathedral (also available from Cypress), and Spanish Fisherman, available here on laurahawley.ca.

Words by Robbie Smith

Refrain:

Let’s have some music, there’s a lot of sweet music in my soul
Let’s have some music, gonna reach out and touch you that’s my goal
Let’s have some music, sing out high, sing out strong
Gotta have a lot of that lovin’ music, it’s been too long

Bring a message of love, bring a message of peace to the people near and far
Make them see that in time we’ll be much better off than we are
Gather round, hear the sound of the laughter that it brings
Pick up your voices, one by one, until the rafters ring

[Refrain]

You see I’m your brother and I wanna befriend you
I’ve got so much love to lend you
Just rise up from your chairs and sing
It’s come the time of the harvest and we’re gathered here to offer our best
Music to the world, every boy and girl, you gotta sing now

[Refrain]

It can give us hope to help us cope with the burdens of this life
Try again to put an end to the suffering and the strife
It can give us the strength to forge ahead, it can teach us so many things
So set the stage, turn the page, let’s all begin to sing

[Refrain]

Let’s have some music, Let’s have some music, Let’s have some music, Let’s have some music
