This piece is full of bright, youthful energy set in a musically accessible style that I think young singers will relate to and enjoy singing! It tells the story of a little seed waking up to experience the sun, rain, and earth, and rising up to greet the wonderful world outside the soil – a simple and beautiful metaphor for young people venturing out to find their place in the world to thrive.

Commissioned by the Ottawa Children’s Concert Choir – Robert Filion, artistic director.

In the heart of a seed,
Buried deep, so deep,
A dear little plant
Lay fast asleep.

It dreamed of the sun
Shining warm and bright
Then along came the message
When the time was right:

"Wake up," said the sunshine,
"And go to the light."

In the heart of a seed,
Buried deep, so deep,
A dear little plant
Lay fast asleep.

It dreamed in the soil
Of a time to grow
Feel the music of the rain
And the earth/roots below

"Wake up," said the raindrops,
And hear our song

The little plant heard
And it rose to see
What the wonderful
Outside world might be.

"Wake up," said the sunshine,
said the raindrops,
said the earth
"And go to the light."

Original poem:

In the heart of a seed,
Buried deep, so deep,
A dear little plant
Lay fast asleep.

"Wake," said the sunshine,
"And creep to the light."
"Wake," said the voice
Of the raindrops bright.

The little plant heard
And it rose to see
What the wonderful
Outside world might be.
