This is a fiery setting of William Blake’s poem, Pentecost, paired with an adaptation of the Veni Sancta Spiritus chant from the Liber Usualis. Written for the wonderful Christ Church Cathedral Choirs, Ottawa, directed by Matthew Larkin, it features the men’s voices in a complex texture and demands a high level of rhythmic sophistication in all parts. It was premiered at the Cathedral for the service of Pentecost in May 2016 as the Gradual Motet, and you will hear the movement associated with this positioning in the service as you listen to this recording.

Unless the eye catch fire
The God Will not be seen
Unless the ear catch fire
The God will not be heard
Unless the tongue catch fire
The God will not be named
Unless the heart catch fire
The God will not be loved
Unless the mind catch fire
The God will not be known

Veni, Sancte Spiritus,
et emitte caelitus
lucis tuae radium.

O lux beatissima,
reple cordis intima
tuorum fidelium.
